PG&E new service, upgrades and disconnects in San José

What a San José build or teardown needs from PG&E and from the city, in the order it happens.

Who serves San José: San José Clean Energy, the city's community choice provider, buys the electricity. PG&E still delivers it, maintains the lines, bills, supplies gas, and runs every new service, upgrade and disconnect.

From city permit to PG&E meter in San José

  1. City permit. Building permits go through Planning, Building & Code Enforcement (Building Division), using SJPermits.org for applications, payments and inspections, and SJePlans for plan submittal.
  2. PG&E application. The new service, upgrade or disconnect is a separate application to PG&E. A complete package the first time is what keeps it moving.
  3. PG&E design and scheduling. PG&E assigns a job owner, designs the service and schedules its crews. This is where most jobs stall without follow-up.
  4. City final and release. The Building Division's inspections page lists PG&E meter releases and a Pre-Final Meter Request Form (Form 329). Ask about the meter release when you schedule your final electrical inspection rather than after.
  5. Meter set. PG&E sets the meter and energizes once it has the release and its own work is done.

San José rules that affect PG&E work

Demolition

With an approved demolition permit, the city tells owners to contact PG&E at least 30 days before demolition to disconnect and remove the gas service. Build that 30 days into the demo schedule.

Gas in new construction

San José's natural gas prohibition for new buildings (Chapter 17.845) is under an enforcement moratorium, so gas service applications are possible again. Confirm with the city before you design around gas.
